The Welcome Organisation are claiming that at least five homeless people have passed away in Belfast since the beginning of this year. Out Of Luck...

The charity cites poor mental and physical health due to harsh condition as the cause of these deaths. In a separate report by the BBC, the average life expectancy of someone who is homeless is about 47 years old.

Whilst there has been a rise in rough sleeping in Northern Ireland over the past five years, volunteers allege that there are many more ‘hidden homeless’ who are using council services without identifying themselves, reports Inside Housing.

Northern Ireland require homeless people to register with the Northern Ireland Executive before they can be placed in a hostel, which puts many people off and leaves them on the streets, reports the Welcome Organisation.

Sandra Moore, director of homelessness services at the Welcome Organisation, said: “The fact that you have to wait for forms to be filled in before you can get proper care is a problem. We’re pushing for that to change, so people can get a roof over their heads while they go through the bureaucratic process. It would save money in the long run because the quicker you get someone off the streets, the less care they need further down the road.”
