    Don Foster, the communities minister has announced a £1.9 million fund to assist homeless families that are being accommodated in bed & breakfasts.

    He said the money must be used by councils to reduce the number of families unlawfully stuck there.

    According to the law, councils can only place families in B&Bs as a last resort, and for not more than six weeks.Cliff Top Hotel

    Nevertheless, statistics have revealed the way councils help homeless people in their area.

    15 local authorities accounted for nearly 80% of all families living in B&Bs for more than six weeks, which is against the law.

    The £1.9m funding will be beneficial to seven councils which will aid in meeting the housing needs of the vulnerable families in their care.

    24 dash has listed the councils receiving funding, they are:

    • Birmingham, which will receive £297,500 to run a health and financial support service to help at risk families get their lives back on track;
    • Crawley Council, which will be given £299,150 to fund a long-term private rental scheme;
    • Barking and Dagenham, which will use its £300,000 to improve its system for placing people in rented accommodation and offer money management advice to tenants;
