A new guide to successfully supporting ex-offenders into private renting housing has been launched by Crisis.
Finding and sustaining a home in the Private Rented Sector – The essentials, draws on Crisis' longstanding experience of building sustainable tenancies for disadvantaged and single homeless people. The Crisis Private Renting Programme currently funds schemes across the country that specialise in housing ex-offenders.
For many of those leaving prison the private rented sector is the best available housing option, however ex-offenders may need additional support to find and then to keep private tenancies.
Sarah Mitchell, head of Private Renting at Crisis, said: “The private rented sector is often the only housing option available for people leaving prison, but finding and then maintaining a tenancy throws up some unique challenges.
This guide draws on the experience of schemes up and down the country that have a solid track record in creating and maintaining such tenancies, and ultimately preventing homelessness.”
The Ministry of Justice's National Offender Management service commissioned Crisis to develop a guide to help frontline staff working with ex-offenders make best use of the private rented sector. The guide includes many practical tips and checklists, and some real life case studies of private renting access schemes achieving real success in housing.
