Changes to Disability Benefits
The benefits cap of £500 a week rolls out across Britain as part of the changes to the welfare system, the biggest since the 1940s.
Couples and lone parents will receive no more than £500 a week, while a £350 limit applies to single people. (You can read our blog on this here.) But how do these benefit changes affect disability benefits?
Personal Independence Payments (PIP) is gradually replacing Daily Living Allowance (DLA) for people aged 16 to 64, even for those with an indefinite or lifetime DLA award. For those with existing DLA claims, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will have sent you a letter telling you more about PIP and when you might be affected by PIP.
Most likely, your DLA won't be affected by PIP until 2015 or later unless:
Your care or mobility needs change
You reach the end of your existing DLA award
You are no longer eligible for DLA
However, all new claimants from 16-24 for disability benefits in England, Scotland and Wales will be for required to claim for PIP and not DLA.
Through PIP, you could receive between £21 to £134.40 a week to help with the extra costs caused by your condition. How much you get is not based on your condition, but how your condition affects you.
PIP is made up of 2 components; ‘Daily Living Component' and ‘Mobility Component'. Whether you get 1 or both of these depends on how your condition affects you. You will need an assessment to work out the level of help you get to ensure you are getting the right support and payment.
Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is usually paid every 4 weeks. It is tax free and you can get it whether you're in or out of work. To receive your payment, all benefits, pension and allowances are paid into an account.
