Work has begun on the Hartlepool Borough Council project which aims to provide the Centre for Independent Living on the site of the current Havelock Centre in Burbank, reports The Hartlepool Mail.

It is expected to be completed by late summer 2016 and is a £4m development.

Coun Carl Richardson, chair of the Adult Services Committee, said: “Despite the severe financial constraints being imposed on the council, we are still managing to secure investment in services and facilities by being creative and innovative. There’s no doubt that this facility will provide the very best services for people in our town with disabilities along with vital other facilities for the local community.”

Gill Alexander, the council’s chief executive, added: “This building demonstrates our commitment to improving services for people with disabilities as well as providing a much needed boost to the local economy in Hartlepool. This is an exciting development in the heart of the town which I am sure will be warmly welcomed by the many people who will benefit from it in years to come.”
