London's improvements to mental health crisis care
London aims to improve mental health crisis care to deliver swift support using effective methods to develop the system overall.
Representatives from 22 organisations, including the NHS, Metropolitan Police, social care, housing and local councils will join forces to ensure this goal is achieved.
The care that can be provided to individuals is variable and they have the option to choose any one of the 14 places for help; accident and emergency, the transport police, homecare, or a police cell for mental health assessments.
It was understood that the system needed to deliver support for individuals in whatever circumstances and link back to the service they asked for help from. In terms of London’s mental health strategic clinical network, a completely new system with a strategy that implements social care, housing and employment support and substance abuse is required.
Suggestions have included a round-the-clock telephone helpline whereby 24-hour psychiatric services in accident emergency departments across London can be contacted, and mental health crisis care training can be provided for GPs, practice nurses and community staff.
More than half of all police forces in England currently work with the NHS in this way and results have shown that a larger proportion of people are going to suitable health-based places of safety.
Further action and hard work will be undertaken to contribute to excellent crisis care for all members of public.
