A new £6.5 million state of the art care home is opening next month that will specialise in dementia care.
Gwalia Mynydd Mawr in the Gwendraeth Valley, South Wales, will specialise in dementia care and has been built with a dementia-friendly design.
Those staying at the home will have 24-hour dementia specific care and support,as well as nursing care, rehabilitation treatment and respite care.
The site has a dementia friendly design, with the rooms split into five clusters to create the feeling of a close-knit community with two courtyard gardens.
Lynne Colman, registered manager of the new facility, said:
The ethos is based on respecting individuality, we recognise everyone has their own preferences and needs, for example, when someone moves in we know their favourite food doesn't change, we know the time they get up won't alter and we know the things they like to do remain the same.
That's why we'll take time to get to know residents so we can tailor our services to each individual, ensuring that they can continue to live as they want to.
Angela Griffiths, head of learning and development at Gwalia, said the 28 new staff, both care based and non-care based are receiving extensive training:
The package combines traditional classroom-based learning with e-learning modules and all staff, including those in non-care giving roles, will also receive training on dementia, demonstrating our commitment to raising awareness of the condition in order to provide the highest quality specialist dementia care.
