New partnership for one housing association sees vulnerable tenants receiving homeware
Tenants with vulnerabilities being rehoused in County Durham are receiving homeware for their new homes thanks to a partnership between a housing association and a local charity shop.
Derwentside Homes is working with the British Red Cross to help put together Home Start kits contain items such as crockery and cutlery along with curtains and kettles, reports 24dash.
The scheme aims to help tenants in difficult situations, for example those being rehoused due to domestic violence who may have nothing of their own, feel more settled in their new homes.
The idea for the scheme came from Derwentside Homes tenant and British Red Cross volunteer Laurie Hume. She said “I’d got to know the welfare team at Derwentside Homes when they helped me as a tenant, as well as through my work at the food bank, and I saw an opportunity to help tenants who may have had to be rehoused suddenly. There was already help available to provide the big things, such as furniture, but nothing for the smaller items, which can add up if buying from new.”
Derwentside Homes’ Welfare Rights Officer Gregg Peart said: “Some of the tenants we rehouse are in desperate situations and may have nothing to their name, so being able to provide all the items they need to set up their own home is fantastic. When Laurie approached us with the idea we were delighted to support it, and the work of the British Red Cross in the process. We hope by raising awareness of the scheme we will also encourage other tenants and the general public to think about donating items themselves – it could really make a difference to someone in their local community.”
