A record number of calls were received by a charity helpline from Londoners facing homelessness. Home For The Homeless

Homelessness charity Shelter said they received around 1,000 calls a month regarding homelessness issues between July and December 2013. This is the largest number the charity has ever had to deal with.

Figures from the latest government data show that over 4,400 households were declared homeless in just three months, a 13% increase on the same period the year before, reports Inside Housing.

Due to these latest figures, Shelter is launching its biggest ever fundraising event to help with the growing demand. Vertical Rush is the UK’s tallest and toughest tower-running challenger. It will take place at Tower 42 in the City of London and runners will race up 920 steps, 42 floors, of one of London’s tallest buildings.

Campbell Robb, chief executive of Shelter, said: “In these tough times, where everyone’s budgets are under coming under enormous strain, it can take just one thing to tip any one of us into a downward spiral that could put our home at risk. More people than ever are turning to Shelter for support when the worst happens. But with demand so high, the heart-breaking fact is that at the moment we just can’t help everyone who needs it.”
