    A change to the benefit system and the introduction of universal credit has concerned landlords in Derbyshire that their social housing tenants may become unexpectedly in arrears and have their homes at risk.

    Derby Homes is warning tenants that payments through the new universal credit system will me made four weeks in arrears. This will mean that they will need to wait four weeks for their first payment and will now need to begin to save extra money to cover their rent for that period, reports the Derby Telegraph.

    Councillor Paul Bayliss has said that some tenants will be unable to afford the extra payments and despite the efforts of Derby homes, many people will not be able to take on board what they need to do.

    A DWP spokeswoman has said that people who are eligible for universal credit will be able to apply in advance for their first payment if they are struggling to cover the first four weeks, adding “The advance will be recovered from future benefit payments over the following six months.”

    Mr Bayliss added: “Despite best efforts to communicate what is happening, people often don’t read the information they are sent, sometimes they might not understand it.

    “They could be in danger of being evicted because they don’t know about the situation rather than through any fault of their own.”
