The Welsh Government has announced protection for supporting people's budgets
Due to united lobbying from housing bodies, supporting people budgets in Wales will be protected against expected cuts next year.
The three main political parties have agreed to grand funds to ease heavy cuts to the supporting people programme in a draft budget announcement yesterday, reports Inside Housing.
The parties, Labour, the Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru have jointly agreed to a £5.5m mitigation to ensure continued investment of £134.4m in supported people budgets for 2014/15.
This represents a 1.5% reduction on the budget for 2012/13 which was £136.5m.
Keith Edwards, director of the Chartered Institute of Housing Cymru, said: ‘The housing community in Wales across all sectors has been united in lobbying for this. It’s another example of a completely different approach in Wales when compared with England.’
Nick Bennett, chief executive of Community Housing Cymru, said: ‘With the National Assembly facing some of the toughest budget decisions in its history, CHC called on Assembly Members to use their political power and influence, to help protect vital services and they listened to us.
‘Today’s announcement means the Welsh Government has continued to maintain their impressive levels of spending on preventative services, which clearly shows they (Welsh Government) have acknowledged the true worth of these services.’
56,000 people each year are helped to live independently through the Supporting People Programme. They provide support services for disabled people, ex-forces, those with mental or physical health problems, young and older people and the homeless.
